3D Technologies for Cell Phones

Value Proposition

Cell phones with 3D displays have now entered the market, following the trend in how we will view and enjoy content in the future. Although one of the driving forces for introducing 3D displays on phones is gaming applications, a full-featured 3D phone should also allow other types of content, such as pictures and videos, to be displayed in 3D. However, there is currently very limited 3D content available for consumers to enjoy on their phones. The basic premise of 3DMedia's technology is to solve the problem of 3D content generation for cell phones using a single cell phone camera. Our solution makes it easy for consumers to use their camera-equipped cell phones to capture content that can be used to create 3D content for viewing on 3D-capable cell phone or other displays. 3DMedia's technology provides a compelling case for consumers to buy 3D cell phones, since with it they can create and enjoy their own 3D content using their camera-equipped phones and download it to the web for sharing.

3DMedia is also developing the technology to create 3D combination products pairing existing camera phones with 3D display products such as 3D Digital Picture Frames (DPFs) and 3D Media Players for viewing 3D content on HDTVs. Our technology will also be available for PC platforms. 3DMedia can offer service providers the additional value proposition of creating a product ecosystem by selling both cell phones and licensed 3D display devices in their retail stores. 3DMedia believes this technology will be one of the key enablers for the proliferation and adoption of 3D content in the consumer market.

3D Technology

3D Capture and Creation Technology Embedded in a Cell phoneAll of 3DMedia's proprietary technologies are in its 3D creation and capture software. The 3D creation technology creates 3D content from 2D content captured with 3D-enabled camera phones. The 3D capture technology assists users in taking better quality stereoscopic pictures for input to 3DMedia's creation technology. These two software products operate independently. Both can be run on cell phones that include cameras and 3D displays.

The 3D capture technology can be used by itself in camera phones without 3D displays, and the 3D creation software can be used in 3D display-only devices or run on PCs.

3D Capture Technology Embedded in a Cell Phone

The 3D capture software will assist the user in positioning the camera to optimize the quality of the resulting 3D pictures. The following very simple procedure is used to capture 3D content.

3D Capture Technology Operation in a Cell Phone

  1. Set the camera phone into 3D stereo mode
  2. Take the first picture
  3. The camera phone displays directions for positioning the camera for the second picture
  4. Move the camera phone to the new position and align the guide lines in the viewfinder
  5. The camera phone automatically takes the second picture when it is aligned properly

3DMedia's Technology Advantages

  • Our solution allows consumers to create 3D content using existing cell phone platforms without the need for dual cameras
  • Using our approach for 3D capture, the stereo base can be altered to enhance or reduce the depth of captured 3D images, which can yield more effective results when taking far away landscape pictures or close-up shots
  • Our solution allows consumers to use their cell phones to capture both 2D and 3D content using a very straightforward process
