3D Technologies for HDTVs

There are currently a very large number of 3D TVs as well as 3D PC monitors in households and this number is expected to continue growing rapidly in the upcoming years. However, there is currently very limited 3D content available for consumers to enjoy.

Consumers have inherently different sensitivities and preferences while viewing 3D content. In addition, proper viewing of 3D content depends on the size of the display screen as well as the distance of the viewer from the screen. When a person is sitting far away from a TV, the depth appears more elongated, and when he is closer it appears more condensed.  The figure below displays the viewing distance impact on a user’s 3D experience.

It is important to accommodate the user’s preferences and environment to make 3D technology more appealing to a wider audience. ViewFusion Correction takes into consideration user preferences and distance from the HDTV and adjusts the 3D content appropriately to optimize the user experience.  The figure below shows the depth compensation that is supported in today’s 3D displays as well as 3DMedia’s solution. Current 3D HDTVs can only change the position of the center of the perceived depth. However, if the depth is too much for users, it is not possible to compensate.

ViewFusion Correction takes into consideration the viewing preferences, the screen size, and potentially the viewer distance, and changes not only the center of the perceived depth but the actual depth itself, thus making the viewing of 3D photos/video a more enjoyable and impactful experience.
